"I thought I could."

"You did fine." I knew what he needed now, what he was begging me for in his own weird way. I drew him to me, and he let himself be drawn, all awkward limbs and nervous watchfulness, ashamed and wanting, and ashamed of wanting.

I pulled him onto my lap and held him close, stroking here and there, petting him, trying to comfort him, the way I used to. It felt awkward and strange for a moment, but the truth was I'd missed this as much as he had. It had only been a short time of estrangement, but heaven help me, I'd missed him so.

I pressed a kiss against his neck, and he held very still.

"Do you still like me?" he asked hoarsely.

"Mm-hm." I pressed another kiss, and he tried to hold still for it, he really did, but he had to squirm away.

"Then...maybe..." He wanted to ask, but it was hard. It's so hard to ask for what you want sometimes.

"Okay," I told him. "After supper."

"I'm not that hungry."

I patted his thigh. "I am."

He gave a frustrated groan, and leaned back against me. "Just a little fuck?" he said in a soft voice.

He was always going to be a negotiator, wasn't he?

"And have you collapse from hunger afterwards? I don't think so."

He made an even more frustrated sound. "I had a big lunch."

"And now you'll have a big supper." I took the chance and pressed one last kiss against his shoulder, and that did it, he leaped off me and headed towards the kitchen, indignation in his every grouchy step.

He really was hot and bothered tonight, wasn't he? I watched him go, feeling better about this whole mess. He wasn't faking this. He was as confused and disheartened by recent circumstances as I was...and he'd missed me.

I wouldn't let him down. I'd help him and take care of him and maybe this could be real after all. Maybe I'd blown past the friends with benefits arrangement long ago, and gotten myself a boyfriend.

It wasn't nearly so bad to have a boyfriend with a few emotional issues, or an abusive ex or something. That was actually...fine. Because in a relationship, you worked together and both tried your hardest, and maybe, if we didn't stop, we could outrun whatever he was afraid of, or fix it, get through it somehow and be real together, in whatever ways we could.

I got up and followed him to the kitchen, where he was resentfully stuffing his mouth with food, barely pausing to chew, and continuing to glare at me.

Yeah. This was normal...for us.

Everything was a negotiation, and everything was a challenge. I sat down at the table and began to eat like a civilized adult, slowly.

He let out a frustrated breath and rolled his eyes at me.
